A media sensation was created on December 1, 1952 when the New York Daily News carried a front-page story (under the headline "Ex-GI Becomes Blonde Beauty") announcing that in Denmark Jorgensen had become the recipient of the first "sex change". This clip is from her press conference upon her arrival.

  • I like her. In everything I have ever seen or read about her, she was always dignified, brave, funny, sassy, clever, and always a lady. Great wit, and always in control! I remember reading her autobio before I had my surgery. It gave me courage knowing that what she had gone through had been much more difficult, complicated, dangerous, and risky, yet she had made it through it all okay. And she did so with her head held high. She never let the media abuse her, instead using it to her advantage.

  • I remember reading about Christine and as usual find her and other pioneers in history amazing and brave.

She especially handled herself with grace and poise in spite of the curious (and sometimes bumbling) press.

.....I wonder what kept them from eating her up alive?

  • wow she was really beautiful :) stories like these imo should be more well known

  • She and Candy Darling were awesome. My parents are Danish born, last name's JorgensenThough I'm happy with my "plumbing" and the closest I came to a dress was a bathrobe,I still wonder if we're related.

  • What a dignified, elegant, intelligent woman...I think all mtf's should see this and listen to the interview with Nipsey Russell...AMAZING COURAGE SHE HAD!

  • I'm reading her 1967 autobiography, it is fascinating. She rose far above all her detractors. A truly classy woman!

  • greaaat !

  • I was thinking Rosalind Russell, but Bette would be my second....

  • I remember when she died, but do you know what happened to her after the surgery? It was as if she had fallen off the face of the earth.

  • I agree....I like the way that she gave the reporters the brushoff saying: "I appreciate you for coming but I think that it is a bit too much." lol

  • Ever seen her astrological chart?. Her transition was meant to be....I think many people felt uneasy about it but nevertheless accepted her because she offered no insult and deep down they somehow felt the rightness (new word, lol) of it.
