Totally lame. The pathetic little fire couldn't possibly have raised the temperature of that bulk of metal ("nearly a ton of steel") by more than a couple of degrees. Thermite would have been the obvious, indeed only, avenue of applying meaningful thermal stress.
Cutting at the hinge is pointless because the locking bolts extend outward from the door into the door frame of the main body of the safe along all 4 edges. Hinge removal is only meaningful when unlocked.

This is dumb. The fire they used to heat the safe wouldn't keep 2 campers warm on a cool summer night. The grinder was doing just fine and would have cut through if they had stuck to grinding one spot instead of jumping around with it. Yeah, you aren't going to cut through it in 30 seconds but the fact is it was cutting through and would continue to cut through.
