Dr. Arroway(Jodie Foster) goes through a wormhole (Einstein-Rosen bridge), which is a tunnel through space and time. In the 18 hours' missing time on earth, she meets her "dad" in another dimension.

The prediction of existence of wormholes was advocated by Einsteins equations, one of which was solved by Schwarzschild later on. It predicted that if the mass and radius go along the following equation, there can be a wormhole (a curved-space structure that can join two distant regions of space-time through a tunnel-like curved spatial shortcut).
