In Toraja society, the funeral ritual is a very elaborate and expensive event in a persons life. We attended a funeral while we were there. The funerals are very intricate affairs and last for three days. Temporary housing is constructed for the large number of guests who attend. The guests bring gifts, often animals who are sacrificed during the funerals. The meat is passed out to the guests and we learned that this is one way to ensure that the less fortunate in the society are fed. The family of the deceased invited us to sit with them in their tent. They were extremely gracious down to earth people and we instantly felt at home.
