In India, about 20 million patients suffer from heart failure, a number that is increasing by two million annually. About 20% of these patients die each year without aid. Heart transplantation is limited by availability of donor organs and at present, donor supply limits heart transplantation to about 3,500 hearts globally every year. Patients with end-stage heart failure have limited options — heart transplant or use of Left ventricular assist devices (LVADs).

A left ventricular assist device (LVAD) is a battery-operated, mechanical pump-type device implanted surgically. It helps maintain the pumping ability of a heart that can't effectively work on its own. LVADs reduce the risk of death in end-stage heart failure patients by 50 percent at six and 12 months, and extend the average life span from 3.1 months to more than 10 months.

USPs of LVAD:
Physiological pulsatile flows - just like the natural heart.
Small enough to be totally implantable.
Single moving part per ventricle on which life critically depends. Therefore long-term performance is expected.
High flows and pressures possible. Therefore suitable even for heavy workers.

The cost of an LVAD procedure amounts to Rs 45 lakh which includes Rs 35 lakh for the device and Rs 10 lakh as surgery expenses.

LVADS are slowly becoming a solution rather than a transition phase for most heart ailments. Narayana Hrudayalaya is Asias first and only artificial heart (LVAD) centre. The cardiologist scripted their name to be among the pioneers after performing Asias first artificial heart transplant successfully in a 54-year-old man in 2008. This was 221st of its kind in the world and first in Asia.

The doctors in Narayana Hrudayalaya believe that the cost of the procedure can be brought down to 10 lakh (all inclusive) by fostering an increase in volume.

  • yes real, but in no successtory they tell about inflammation, risks of defects, blooddamage etc. Not one machine in this area is better than what God made.

  • No machine is better, yet. But it has unlimited possibility to improve. We can change and design newer and better devices, while we can't change much our boddies... (ok, maybe with genetic engeneering we can... whatever). And obviously for this man the mechanical heart is better then what God made FOR HIM.

  • no actually my friend is in

  • clearly only the ultra

    rich can live twice,

  • get a pace maker

  • @classicstreetfighter He wouldn't need it if god had done a half ass job.

  • @marpalaki By making comment like "This machine is a Heart mate. Learn some more before you open your mouth." What are you trying to prove? Obviously you have no clue of what you are typing. I live in the Bay Area in California. The hotbed for medical device companies. Thoratec is located in my backyard. Don't teach me about biomed kid. In fact you're the person who needs to "Google" stuff before you try acting smart. Period.

  • @marpalaki Let me first clarify why I made that comment. Though many people watch these videos out of curiosity, there are a few who really want to know precise information to help out a loved one. I had very clearly implied that the person speaking in the video is a retard ard not anyone else. So stop assuming things that are convenient to you. Secondly, you come across as someone uneducated, illinformed and ignorant. This assist device is made by Thoratec, Heartmate is the name of the model.

  • @quijjhg Nobody here is a retard. If there is a retard then it`s you. If you are "Biomedical engineer" then you should know that this machine is not a thoratec. This machine is Heart mate. Learn some more before you open your mouth.

  • This is not a artificial heart, who ever was commenting during this video is a retard. This is just a left ventricular assist device. What retards. Being a Biomedical engineer working in the Bay Area I know this. The company that made this device is Thoratec. They make only Ventricular assist devices!! THIS IS NOT A FREAKIN ARTIFICIAL HEART! Go google abiocor, that is the artificial heart.

  • Ha! tell me about the indians and their castes social class system !

    yeaah....

by the way... the tests with human beings of the french heart start this fall.

the first tests made on animals let it conceptors think about a 4 to 10 years lenght in time...

last thing: i wouldnt even get into an indian train when i see the today's 60 dead people because they cant even drive trains...LMAO

  • @BERSERKERDEMON1 Well i worked with Robert Jarvik in 1977 with HIS artificial heart, and that was 33 years ago.

    Quel dommage, mon ami!!
