Great advice. This is similar to what my own mother did when I would come home with a new word, especially a word that was indecent or unkind. When I asked her, "Mommy, what does queer mean?" or "Mommy, what's a nigger?" she didn't jump my case for using the word. She asked where I'd heard it, explained the meaning, and let me know that it wasn't a nice word.
In the second case, I'd just heard my best friend called that. This was how I discovered that racial prejudice existed. 6 years old.
But I guess that's pretty basic. To go a little further, an "indecent" word would be a word that is rude, makes people uncomfortable, and is unneeded, since a less rude word is available. For instance, instead of calling somebody a "faggot," it's easy enough to say "gay," or "homosexual," or even "queer" (though that was as bad as faggot back when I was six).
