With breathtaking clarity, renowned UMass Economics Professor Richard Wolff breaks down the root causes of today's economic crisis, showing how it was decades in the making and in fact reflects seismic and systemic failures within American-style capitalism as a whole. Wolff traces the source of the economic crisis to the 1970s, when wages began to stagnate and American workers were forced into a dysfunctional spiral of borrowing and debt that ultimately exploded in the mortgage meltdown. By placing the crisis within this larger historical and systemic frame, Wolff argues convincingly that both the government "bailouts" and calls for increased market regulation will not be enough to address the real causes of the crisis - in the end suggesting that more fundamental changes will be necessary to avoid future catastrophes.
Richly illustrated with graphics and charts, this is a superb introduction that allows ordinary citizens to comprehend, and react to, the unraveling crisis.

@dumba55mobile do you enjoy making an ass of yourself in public? at the least salaries should rise with inflation, as you call yourself "dumb ass" you are so right.... you think the "market" is going to consume on credit for ever, that is the stupidity of people from the right, profiteers, selfish egotist and one issue thinkers, money.

Capitalism didn't hit the fan, that's just the elite throwing shit on the workers- of course any rational person can see that by over reaching and trying to squeeze every penny out of the worker that they are planting the seeds their own destruction but overweening greed is not rational - which is why we have cautionary tales like Killing The Goose That Laid the Golden Eggs read to children, it's too bad the elite had the fairy tale Atlas Shrugged read to them as children.

@Hyena62 that "capitalism" that you mention is the result of the law of the jungle, the most violent and cunning get to keep as much as they can get away with, no law no regulation.

@frankleeseaux my apologies, I probably made a mistake, keep up the good work and I wish one day we get a media that give equal time to the two sides like it used to be and people have a chance to be inform about the issues and not be victims of propaganda. take care...

@maloso305 Yes, actually, I have been reading your posts. I agree, we are saying very much the same thing. The only point I'm really lost on at the moment is why your very first post addressed to me accused me of being wrong about money, or something. There are possibly an issue or two upon which we may disagree, But, we are in, at least, basic agreement.
