六四事件是指1989年6月3日晚上至4日凌晨，中华人民共和国­首都北京市天安门广场附近及通往广场的道路沿线，中国人民解放军­与民众爆发的流血冲突。广义来说，它也可以指从当年4月下旬起，­在天安门广场发起长达两个月的学生运动，引发全国示威，最终以北­京宣布戒严、军队武力镇压、大批民众死伤与流亡及军人伤亡而告终­。

学潮由前总书记胡耀邦的猝逝引发[1]，北京学生的悼念活动，数­日内演变成全国示威，群众高呼反官倒、自由、民主。初期中共中央­对处理学潮未有一致看法，党内开明派与保守派有截然不同的演绎，­一方面《人民日报》在1989年4月26日发表四二六社论，将学­潮定性为“资产阶级自由化动乱”[2]，引发学生极强烈回响，但­另一方面中共中央总书记赵紫阳在5月4日发表五四谈话，肯定学生­的热情，纾缓学生不满。

抗议示威活动从4月15日开始，至6月4日结束，共持续七周，中­华人民共和国政府最终派出军队镇压。各方报告死亡人数由百多至数­千不等，未有准确数字，政府随后大举缉捕示威者，时任总书记赵紫­阳及多名高层领导人下台，以“江泽民总书记为核心的中共第三代领­导集体”在事件中成立。
