Marva Hicks, a native of Petersburg, Virginia, started out singing in a church. After taking a trip to New York, Hicks was attracted to theater and later took acting classes in Washington, D.C. From there she joined the short lived singing group, Eighties Ladies in 1981, who were produced by Roy Ayers. Hicks wound up doing acting and singing in Broadway shows for nearly three years.
Later on during the 1980s, Hicks met Stevie Wonder, and began singing background vocals on his concert tours, and sang background vocals on his album, 'Characters', that was released in 1987. She released her self-titled debut album in 1991, which produced the singles, 'I Got You Where I Want' and 'Never Been In Love Before', and she sings in a duet with Stevie Wonder on her song, 'Strong Is Our Love'. Despite the good recommendations by music critics of her being a singer for the smooth jazz-urban adult contemporary format, her album didnt sell well at all. She has since been a backup singer at venues.
Beautiful voice. She reminds me of Anita Baker. Please watch Michael Jackson's Live at Royal Brunei Concert, she sings a duet with Michael, I Just Can't Stop Loving You. Their chemistry together is powerful.
