A nine-year-old Peter Ewart, with father Clarence, plan a trip via CPR train and Great Lakes steamer from Montreal, through the Great Lakes, and across the Canadian Prairies, to the Alberta/ British Columbia border. The route is first demonstrated on a map, beginning in Montreal, Quebec to Kingston, Ontario, and following the Canada/US border through Lake Ontario, Lake Erie, Lake Huron and Lake Superior. The Lake portion, at one point, appears to be aboard the steamship Noronic. Noteworthy was passage through a series of locks. The footage also gives glimpses of other boats and the stormy weather that is typical of the Great Lakes at certain times of year.
Very interesting to see the Noronic as my grandfather sailed on her in the summers of 1917 and 1918 as a steward

The passenger steamer that Peter travelled on was the "ill-fated" Canada Steamship Lines NORONIC which was destroyed by fire in Toronto Harbor on September 17, 1949. He probably sailed from Sarnia, Ontario to Port Arthur, Ontario, or perhaps Duluth. I also noticed the steamer HAMONIC and either KEEWATIN or ASSINIBOIA following NORONIC through the Canadian Locks at Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario.

Wouldn't it be wonderful to have audio with this! Love the use of old brochures and the glimpses of the train and the stormy weather. There seem to be two different trips recorded here, as Peter is older in some places than in others.... If anyone recognizes the ports or locks shown in this footage, please inform.
