"Trio" is a site-specific sound installation located within the Victory Theatre, a now crumbling 1920's vaudeville theater in Holyoke, Massachusetts.
Three different gages of piano wire are stretched between two steel forms. Centered is a disc, spreading the wire apart while its clear plastic membrane helps amplify the sound. The sounds are created by three mechanical devices that "play" the wire in different ways: violin bow, copper pick, and vibrator. A hidden microphone transmits the sound vibrations into an amplifier filling the room and entire theater with the noises created. Meanwhile, a solid-state relay transforms the voltage from the microphone into a higher voltage that powers the blue LED lights around the perimeter of the oval room. The LEDs become brighter as the sounds becomes louder.
The piece is inspired by the natural amplification of the room and overall condition of the theater itself. As the sounds echo through out the building, they give voice to the old theater, which is in great disrepair. An "instrument" was created to make this noise, because real instruments were once played in this room and theater. Together the form of the installation, oval room and blue lighting all become nautical while the mechanics add a futuristic twist to the piece.
Folks this is worth seeing in the real life form. If it is ever shown again - GO!
