Optimized data centers, virtualization and server security with IBM Security Virtual Server Protection for Vmware.

My name is Jean Paul Ballerini. I work for IBM, and I'm a part of the worldwide team that does sales enablement for security.

So virtualization has brought a great advantage to companies, which is the one of being able to be way more flexible in their IT infrastructure in offering services. The consequence that our customers are telling us is that they now have lost completely control of how many servers they actually have.

Physically, they know, but virtually they don't because you can pop up virtual servers anywhere at any time. So with the IBM Security Virtual Server Protection, we have actually the possibility to decide exactly how many servers, which servers are allowed to run on a system, which ones are allowed to connect on a system, on the network, and therefore make sure that there is not the risk of having systems growing and growing all over the place.

Many companies have thoughts that because they virtualize the systems, now they are safer. And that is definitely wrong. That virtual system is attackable, is vulnerable exactly as it was before. The lack of visibility is what gives that false sense of security. So with IBM Security Virtual Server Protection, we give that visibility back in order to not have a false sense but to have a real security that allows them to protect their environment and keep their IT going.

Our advice to all companies is to take the approach that IBM has taken, even internally, which is the one of secure by design.

When you secure by design, the first benefit that comes to mind is the fact that you architected the system from the ground up to be secured, which means you will not have to patch things around it to make it secure. And security overall, bringing in that security by design, allows to maintain compliance. When you don't have virtual machines that are popping up everywhere, anytime, you have a better use of your resources, and you have a better visibility and optimization of your data center. So with these three aspects, already the return on investment that by installing IBM Security Virtual Server Protection, you can have, and you can expect in your data center.
