I have read about Dien Bein Phu in "The Last Valley" and their performance there was incredible despite losing. As to Algeria the view is in military terms they won, but the long term political position was unsustainable. In the Crimea in 1856 a young British officer watched the French attacking & asked an old officer who had fought there, "Are you sure you won Waterloo?"

@freebeerfordworkers What's so funny free?? The French did a great job. They got where they were supposed to be, kept an eye on the Syrians, managed to hold off the counterattack by the Med Sea, and stayed out of the way of the English regulars and Royal Marines who actually had some combat missions to perform. Compared to their performance in WWII, Dien Bien Phu, and Algeria, this was an impressive outing!! Do I sense some Francophobia on your part?
