Actually the first recorded version of Hello I Love You was in 1965, and it was more "60's style" than the final version..

I thought the same thing when I heard the version of The Stranglers. And not only the riff, the whole refrain sounds like The Doors' " Hello, I love you". And noone ever noticed?

Remember when the chorus was "girl I'd like to sleep with you in the bedroom"? They had to change it to "girl I want to be with you all of the time".... Times, they are a changing. : {
