I don't understand why Dan would even consider this song to be chauvinistic? All the guy is asking the woman is to marry him no matter what his occupation is. I mean, if she TRULY loved him, then she wouldn't cared what kind of money he makes. But then, the modern day woman is kind of narcissitic, self- centered,high-strung, and high maintenance. If they take it as an offense, then who cares? We can't figure out what you gals want anyway. Nor should we. So take us or leave us...

Dan could make any song sound like it was his own...which was usually better than the original!

An amazing rendition by an astonishingly talented artist. Mr. Fogelberg was unmatched in his all around capabilities as a singer, song writer, artist and generous and giving musician. He only allowed a hand full of artists the rights to cover his works, although there were many requests over the years. Alison Krauss being a notable exception with her cover of "Stars". Songs like "Longer" and "Leader of the Band" are amazing in their simplicity and richness of spirit.

@bananamansouth Yes , he ruined a very good version of a song that everyone does the same way, this is a bit different but , the statement of apology to it being anything but the plaintive love song was jumping to the wrong personal conclussion!

Chauvinistic? A man has a right, and I believe a responsibility to the woman, to ask if she wants to have children. If he does want children and doesn't make that clear up front, then he is not being honest with her. He has crippled the relationship at the front end of it. In turn, if she is not honest with him about it, she has done damage to the relationshhip.

@Coullion43 Think it has a bit to do with the Gen X generation. My kids were born in that Decade, late seventies and early to mid eighties. I had my boys at 23 and 26 respectively. Though just one generation ahead of us kids who were born in the early fifities and sixties, our kids were born into a crazed mass media of high tech everything, they LIKE IT and they WANT IT. Kind of figure high maintenance is a given. Don't give up. There are nice girls out there. You will find one.: )

Not many artists today interact with their audience anymore and are full of bad dancing, gimmicks, etc. Part of Dan's gift and charm, together with his music, was being part of his audience. To me, that is very special!

Thank you Beggarsgame! You do and give us the best of Dan!

It's related, I think, to "Gypsy Davey", and "Lady and the Gypsy" rooted in old, old folk songs.

What a stupid thing to say. this is an awesome classic. I've heard better versions than this. Bob Seger for one.

"And as my dad left he said to me, Have fun. Stay single." - Campbell Scott in "Singles". Considering the modern day woman, maybe that mentioned-only character was on to something.
All I'm going to say to the latest rifraf commenting on this video, which I have removed is - folks, it is ok to have an opinion, but keep it clean and respectful. Dan would want it that way. As the moderator here, I will remove all commenting that doesn't follow a code of ethics and contains any curse words. Let It Shine....
