Crews demolished the seventh house out of hundreds of historic homes in the Lower Mid-City neighborhood to make way for new medical complexes - even as Mayor Mitch Landrieu halted the closure of streets in part of the footprint, demanding a design review.
State authorities have already used expropriation (the version of eminent domain in Louisiana's civil law system) to seize one large property from its owners. Several property owners in the footprint have not even received offers as homes are being demolished around them - owners who restored their homes after Hurricane Katrina and are now being squeezed out.
The demolitions have been the subject of a number of law suits, both local and federal.
We know how that feels in Cedar Rapids, Iowa! Getting squeezed out of our historical homes.
