I just bought an intervalometer for my Canon still camera and am playing around with timelapse animations.

Camera is on ISO 800 and in aperture priority mode (@ F3.5) which means shutter speed is on auto with an exposure compensation of +1 (ie. 1 stop over-exposure). The exposure hence varies during the animation from 1/4000s at the start to 10s at the end, which explains why the footage appears to speed up when it gets dark. The apparent flickering as night falls is also for this reason as each successive exposure becomes longer to compensate for the growing darkness.

The interval between each shot is 5s, which is to say (as I just discovered) 5s between the end of one exposure and the beginning of the next, rather that a new shot being taken every 5 seconds. This effect becomes significant when the exposure time changes from shot to shot.
