Two years ago, a friend of mine gave me a CD of Hartmann's Concerto Funèbre. I listened to it, liked it and thus tried to find some more informations about Hartmann on the internet - And found out that there wasn't anything by him on Youtube ! Since that day, I've been thinking about uploading it, and I used to check if anyone had done it every two or three months... And eventually, today I decided to do it. So I checked and... someone had uploaded it, only 7 hours before me ! But it wasn't the movement I intended to upload so I did it anyway and made it a video response... And I thought the anecdote was worth being told.

So, for those of you who didn't know it (my suscribers for instance I guess), I've always been found of "classical" music. This is not my favorite piece, but I like it a lot and since, unlike most of the stuff I like, it wasn't on Youtube yet... It is not an "easy" piece, so you might find it kinda weird, but listen to it carefully anyway. If you like it, I suggest you listen to Shostakovich's string quatets and concertos for violin (awesome). If you don't like it, nevermind, but maybe try to listen to "easier" stuff, like Mendelssohn concerto for violin, or Beethoven's... I guess Steve Reich's "City life" is a very good introduction to contemporary classical music, so "check it out" ! Ahah.

Hum, I don't know much about Hartmann, but here is something from Wikipedia : "Karl Amadeus Hartmann (August 2, 1905 December 5, 1963) was a German composer. Some have lauded him as the greatest German symphonist of the 20th century, although he is now largely overlooked, particularly in English-speaking countries."

I'm glad to see there's now an article about him, because, two years ago, there wasn't ! It's stupid but it makes me feel kinda happy to see that "things are working" and that there is more and more stuff like this on the internet...

PS : If you want some ideas about music to listen, feel free to ask me... But I also need some good ideas ! I really want to improve my musical culture about contemporary classical music, so...

    I cant believe it.

    Apparentely this song deserves more.

I have this song's CD which is played by Isabelle Faust. Her performance was also great!

  • Yeah, the internet is a great medium but I'm afraid it isn't fully used or even properly used... "Most watched" videos on Youtube aren't always the best...

In addition people who listen to that kind of music don't usually seek it on Youtube I guess...

Yet I'm quite happy to see there's more and more "great music" on Youtube. One couldn't find most of these kind of stuff only one year ago.

  • Nice recording. Who is playing solo?

  • Michael Erxleben, with the Berlin Symphonic Orchestra (conductor : Sebastian Weigle)

  • thanks for uploading this great piece. Hartmann wrote 8 magnificent symphonies.

If interested: try Matthijs Vermeulen Symphonies. The Dutch Hartmann.

Can't find anything about him on You Tube.

  • Thanks for the tip ! I knew he had written several symphonies, but so far I've only listened to one of them (symphonies are not what I usually prefer - but actually there are many exceptions). I'm gonna try to find some samples on the internet, see if I like them and then buy the CD.

And yeah, there aren't many things about Hartmann on the internet. Things seem to be changing though, since there is now a decent article about him on Wikipédia, for instance :)

  • This piece was played very recently on the Belgian radio, Musique 3, in different versions whcih were discussed. I discovered the composer and then looked him up on youtube.

  • @IHeartMySnes Saved me from saying the same thing. Hey, that is what brought me here to listen to this gorgeous music. *listens to more Hartmann later*

  • Mahler's true heir and one of the most unjustly neglected composers. Tough music with much heart.

  • Thank you for sharing!
