don't want to sound pretentious but just draw what you see... don't make anything up. Also just start really faintly and slowly sketch it in. Also parts of the face line up with other parts, ie: edge of nose, lines up with corners of eyes

i use a set that has everything from 2h to 8B, (so, 2H, H, HB, B, 2B, 3B, etc), but in this drawing i started with H and went as far as 2B (or maybe 3B)
The Pencils are of the brand 'Stabilo'
