In the 1972 Olympic 800 m final, Wottle immediately dropped to the rear of the field, and stayed there for the first 600 m, at which point he started to pass runner after runner up the final straightaway, finally grabbing the lead in the final metres to win by just 0.03 seconds ahead of the favorite, the Soviet Yevgeny Arzhonov. This gained him the nickname of "The Head Waiter." I responded with this video because I think they are both spectacular finishes!

  • Just goes to show that all that matters is what position you're in when you cross the finish line.

  • Wottle will always be remembered for wearing that white cap on his head. He was so unique. So different. Awesome!

  • 1.45.86 is beyond the capability of those at my city athletics level. 1.52 is a big deal... Wottle got this sub 1.46 time and the Olympic gold by hanging back. He's lucky it wasn't a little faster. But it wasn't a lazy run... you can see he's going faster than a lot of them in that second 100m on the back straight. I'll look at the original clip again later, for sure. I came to this thru Billy Mills (awesome!). Wottle actually slowed down near the line.

  • awesome! what song is this?

  • @braverabbit17 Golf cap, actually.

  • REALLY THE TIME TOTALLY SUCKED. Try to fool us again.

  • 800M MORE LUCK TAN STYLE

  • @LeanaJo76 yeah and he caught shit for wearing it during the National Anthem at the medal ceremony; he forgot to take it off!

  • haha in the beginning i was all like who the hell is the loser in the baseball hat? and now i see that i am very salty

  • @kiplinggroove Ah okay. Well, great performance.

  • @GetBackJack123 This is what Wottle did, he was known as a 'Head Waiter'! It wasn't that he couldn't get to the front, he chose not to. On this occasion, it worked out fine!

  • This shows why you should never mentally give up even if you are in the back. Keep going strong and you must might win.
