  • You rock, as always.

  • re CEOs, I couldn't find too much. though Dr Dre and Jimmy Cayne are likely exceptions to the rule, my guess is that CEOs that partake in illicit drug use prefer cocaine or various designer drugs. but this is yet another one of your red herrings; whether or not the average CEO smokes pot has nothing to do with whether or not pot smokers are free-loading "douchebags".

  • to be clear, I wasn't actually suggesting that polls are scientific, I just wanted to know what you thought about a data point that indicates most Americans don't agree with you. and apparently you think most people are so dumb that they don't realize something entirely unrelated to the discussion may or may not be true and that this doesn't say a whole lot for the average American. now I'm left to wonder if the average American knows what ad hominem and red herring mean.

  • generally polls don't involve everyone. but as Rasmussen is a professional polling service, my guess is they used a statistically relevant sample size which would be a bit more than 20 people.

  • right, because they polled everyone in America. A sample group of 20 people doesn't really count as America. Besides, who gives a shit what people say in a poll? most people are so dumb they don't realize hybrid cars are a joke and think Obama's plans WON'T bankrupt the country, doesn't say a whole lot for the average American. Also, having a job doesn't mean you aren't on government assistance. What's the statistic on CEO's that hit the bong, eh?

  • yes. 100 - 70 is 30. so people that use drugs are more than twice as likely to be employed as unemployed. your original statement was that "generally the people that partake in [smoking pot] are worthless drains on society that exist only to smoke more pot and never want to contribute their share while others have to bust their ass to pick up the slack." but that is statistically false. and what do you say to the poll that found that only 19% of Americans thought pot was worse than alcohol?

  • which means there are 30% freeloading douchebags. What's the percentage of unemployed for people that DON'T do illegal drugs? 10%? excluding frictional unemployment and people undergoing higher education, even lower.

  • re potheads becoming "welfare sucking drains on society": there is plenty of research that suggests poor education, lack of transportation, and physical and mental health problems are bigger barriers to self-sufficiency than drug abuse. furthermore, there are studies that have found that 70% of people that use drugs are employed.

  • also, no one suggested that you said potheads were violent. what I'm suggesting, perhaps too subtly, is that pot use is at least no worse for society than alcohol use. it's probably less harmful. a recent poll showed that 51% of Americans rate alcohol as more dangerous than pot. Just 19% thought pot was worse.

  • perhaps I wasn't clear. let me rephrase: research has shown that a huge majority of felonies including homicides, rape, domestic abuse, and child abuse cases are alcohol related. not alcoholics related. that is, these undesirable activities were carried out by people under the influence of alcohol. not necessarily, those "with a problem".
