The slide thing was funny.

This song figures big in the musical "Show Boat." Apparently it was written in the late 19th century, so it helps "Show Boat" establish a timeframe for the later part of the play. However, apparently, this song enjoyed a renewed appreciation in the 1920s, when "Show Boat" became popular. The song subsequently shows up in both the 1936 and 1951 MGM filmed-versions of the musical.

My mother used to sing that way, way back in the 1950s.
A sad song with a funny little cartoon.

I first became familiar with this song through the Nora Roberts book "Midnight Bayou". Such a sweet, sad song.

During the second time the refrain is sung, I swear that the male voice is Charles K. Harris himself.

@ParamountCartoons They should be like the Warner Bros. crew and restore every Screen Song cartoon and release them on DVD in chronological order. Just like they did with those Popeye DVD's.

Lionsgate (under license from Republic).
