"Every week Meyer would give me a solo in the numbers that we did," Tilton said. "One day during rehearsal, Benny's manager was in the control booth and he heard my solo. He told Benny, who was looking for a girl singer at the time, that I was good. I was asked if I would stay after rehearsal to sing a few songs for Benny. I was thrilled to death."

A rare jewel... this is Martha BEFORE before she signed up with Benny Goodman. She is with the Meyer (or Jeff) Alexander Chorus --- which was formerly known as the Three Hits and a Miss (with four more for the Chorus). From the Camel Caravan Radio Program (8-10-1937).

Orchestra - Benny Goodman.

Early in her career with the Goodman organization, Martha was singing at the SunnyBrook Ballroom in Pottstown, Pennsylvania. When it came time for Benny to introduce her, he gave her a big buildup: "Here is a pretty gal from Hollywood that's really going places." But Martha missed her cue. When she didn't appear on stage, after a moment Benny ad-libbed, "She's not going places, she's already gone."
