The first verse is from Samuel Crossman's 17th-century poem, with verses two and three, although sounding like Restoration themes, actually composed by Robin Mark. The music is from English hymnast John Ireland, who in 1928 penned this popular melody over lunch one day..

Samuel Crossman, a non-conformist minister in the mid-1600s, wrote a six or seven verse Lenten poem that is now included in Anglican and comparable hymnals. Music is by John Ireland, who set it to music in response to a friend's request over lunch. Robin Mark kept the first verse; second and third are new, but still retain a 17th century flavor.
