Digital Flip Book

When I was school my teachers helped us understand how cartoons were made by showing us to make stick figure flip books (each page in the book shows a slight change to a figure when you flip through it appears the figure is moving). This is a similar idea. All the materials needed for this easy task are mostly available in a students school bag every day.

Materials

Digital camera or mobile phone that can take photo
Objects to animate

Method

This is best done in small groups. Instruct the students that the key to this is to have the camera in the same position when taking each photo, so some way of marking this or leaving the camera placed on a level surface animating directly in front will help.

1.Place an object in front of the camera and take picture.
2.Move the object very slightly in one direction, without moving the camera take another picture.
3.Continue this until you have at least 15 photos.
4.Use the review mode on the camera scrolling through quickly to watch the object animated.

Students will now have a good understanding of the process. Let them experiment with different objects and techniques. They will enjoy this task and should come up with some creative ideas
almost immediately.

This task will help student have a deeper understanding of the animation process and will assist them when you set them further animation projects.
