In our vist to Kedarnath last year, we observed a very strange geological phenomena there- a huge area of many square kilometers where there are large debris of stones and mud which are hiding a huge mass of snow beneath them. We couldn't understand the phenomena and shoot a video of it. The cite is few kilometers ahead of Kedarnath in the direction of Gandhi taal.

Few days back, I was searching on the net and found that we were on the Chorabari glacier. It is nearly 13000 feet above see level in the shadow of a sharp Himalayan peek. One can easily hear there a tumbling stone breaking the silence of mountains or water gurgling under the ground, a sign that the glacier is melting from inside. Where it empties out- scientists call it snout- a noisy stream called Mandakini originates from that place and rushes down to meat the river Ganges.

So, the strange phenomena we witnessed at Kedarnath was the retreat of the chorabari glacier.
