@ogwazzo Those songs represent only a fraction of all the songs he's written with the other guys in Lucero. He writes mostly based on his experiences, but if he draws from others on a few songs here and there who cares? Everyone does it. He's a great storyteller and the fact that he's able to translate narrative work into song so fluently is a great skill in itself.
I shouldn't feel the need to defend him, but you seem to make such sweeping judgments based on little sources that I had to.
@ogwazzo A little quick to judge there, aren't we?
Every musician draws inspiration from sources outside themselves, and if you think any different then you're delusional. You picked out his war songs (Blue and Gray, The War, Joining the Army), his solo stuff (Last Pale Light), and a few songs he based on a a motorcycle gang book (Bikeriders, Maggie Chascarillo, Johnny Davis) and then judge him to base all his work on things that didn't happen to him. (continued)
@chopper957 You're insane. Ben lives vicariously through others. Whether it be writing songs about wars he didn't fight in or narratives to books about motor cycle gangs. He is a good musician with a decent voice, but he is no Paul Westernburg. He tries to play himself off as someone he is not.
@ogwazzo and just who is this Paul Westernburg person you speak of?
