Thank you so so much for uploading this! He does refer to "earlier when I was talking about the 'Gun Song', but it was probably a part that was cut out from this interview.

I think it's part of MTIs package when you do "Assassins". There's also one for "Into The Woods" as well.

@FlorestanEusebius1 It is all that I have, at least. I had thought it was the entire footage, but as someone recently pointed out, he does say "earlier when I was talking about the Gun Song'. Perhaps it was edited out of the final interview?

Damn, Sondheim saying that the show should end on an "extreme sadness" is spot on. The show is essentially a meditation on what circumstances would lead anyone to kill somebody and why they would feel justified in such a situation. So sad to me that such circumstances would exist in the first place.

@corsairstw It's hard to sympathize with murderers, but at the same time, you have men like Czolgosz who, while not justified, were pushed to that breaking point by feelings of helplessness and worthlessness. Add mental instability and they're all to be pitied, if not excused.

What a cool thing to discover! Is there a large chunk taken out of the middle? And what was the video designed for? Sondheim seems to be talking to those who are going to music direct it in future productions.

@mrtmulcahey It should be intact, but I had to split it to upload it. It was designed for musicians/composers/performers, yes, but the technical side is interesting even if you're none of those (like me.)
I had some footage of the original (and best) 'Assassins' cast, but YouTube zapped 'em. It's well worth finding the OBC cast CD, if you haven't already! It's a great play.
