Larval White Sturgeon feeding

The International Centre for Sturgeon Studies (ICSS) is located on campus at Vancouver Island University (VIU). Theses white sturgeon were spawned and raised at VIU. This video is not the greatest quality but it shows larval white sturgeon in their first week of feeding. They are eating a special recipe we call "fish fudge". These fish are maintained by students in the Fisheries and Aquaculture program.

Do the larvae take fish-fudge better than ewos trout feed? Do they start on this feed or transition onto it after something like powdered krill or zero? Just curious as I work with sturgeon larvae too.

The larvae took to the fudge about as well as they do to commercial crumb. We found that in the long run, it wasn't as good. The fudge has gelatin in it and it doesn't have any nutritional value so it acted as a filler and the larvae did not grow as well. We are working on finding the best larval diet.

@ICSSVIU I've had good results feeding larvae (at first feed) using a combination of powdered krill and freeze-dried "cyclop-eeze" from Argent. They seem to love it! It floats longer than commercial feed and sticks to the side of tanks easily, which also seems to work well for feeding.
