The lyrics to "Mary, Did You Know?" were originally written for a Christmas program in 1984 by Mark Lowry for the living Christmas tree choir presentation; however, not until several years later that Buddy Greene wrote the music for this song. Mark Lowry is a Christian comedian, songwriter and singer. Michael English was the first artist to record this beautiful song in his debut album, simply called "Michael English," which was released on New Year's Day in 1992.

In 1997, a duet by two top country music artists, Wynonna Judd and Kenny Rogers, of "Mary, Did You Know?" peaked at #55 on the U.S. Billboard Hot Country Singles & Tracks charts.

In 2005, it peaked at #35 on U.S. Billboard Hot Adult Contemporary Tracks and at #32 on U.S. Hot Christian Songs, performed by the 2003 American Idol's Clay Aiken.
