Don't be deceived by this rather straightforward musical scene. THE MUSIC LOVERS is one of the worst movies ever made. Hysterical, loathsome, exploitive, and much of it in horrible taste, like most of Ken Russell.

Is there any evidence that Tchaikovsky actually played the Bb minor in public? He wasn't a terribly good pianist and the pianistic demands of this 'warhorse' are considerable. Anton Rubinstein was initially a stern critic but later an out and out champion but Tchaikovsky was more noted as a conductor......

One of my all time favourite films - bravo Richard Chamberlain! Wonderful as Tchaikovsky. Film now available on DVD!

The on-screen orchestra was Bristol University Orchestra (real musicians) miming to the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Andre Previn. Richard Chamberlain was miming (very well) to the piano playing of Rafael Orozco. I believe it was filmed in Bath.
