Sullivan Summit VIII - Africa Rising took place in June, 2008 in Tanzania with a preliminary stop in Ethiopia.
With 47 nations represented, the spirit of the Rev. Sullivan was alive and well during the Sullivan Summit in Arusha, which was hosted by His Excellency Jakaya Kikwete, President of the Republic of Tanzania. Over 500 delegates including celebrities such as the Rev. Jesse Jackson, comedian and actor Chris Tucker and National Basketball Association (NBA) player Kelenna Azubuike of the Golden State Warriors traveled to Arusha for the Sullivan Summit. Approximately 4,000 attended and participated in the conference, including 6 African Heads of State. A U.S. Presidential Delegation to Tanzania was led by former Secretary of Agriculture Thomas J. Vilsack. The Summit was covered by numerous media outlets from around the world including CNN.
