The Yanesha (Amuesha) people of the Peruvian Central Andean Amazon tell the story of Yompor Santo, one of their most important ancestors. More widely known as Juan Santos Atahualpa, Santo led a massive regional insurgence against the Spanish colonizers and missionaries from 1742 until his death in 1756. The movement, however, continued until the 1780s when Spanish authorities eventually regained control of the area. The video features original drawings by Yanesha artists and is part of a series titled "Where our ancestors once tread: Mapping the historical-cultural space of the Yanesha people." The production is based on research by Yanesha intellectual Espiritu Bautista and anthropologist Richard Chase Smith of the Instituto del Bien Comun. Co-directed by visual anthropologist Wilton Martinez.
