@archknight20 I imagine the audience is still clapping for two reasons mostly. First, people do expect the show to be funny and initially it's difficult to know whether this is serious or not, especially since Letterman adds jokes in between here and there.Why he added the jokes is probably because he needed that support to say something so difficult to the public.
The second reason is because people are idiots. After the first minute they should have kept their mouths shut,

Come on now, how many men fuck around during their marriage...Of course it's wrong, it's immoral, but it still happens. At least he had the balls to be upfront about it, and it takes alot of balls while doing it in front of millions of viewers...so my respect to him! And yes, Jay Leno would probably never have done something like this :-)
