Roy Orbison sings "Crying" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985. The first Farm Aid benefit concert.

Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.

Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

  • @petervankan1 Well, award evenings are a different case, they always do that there.. :(

  • @Ismofani11 Yes. Apart from tv shows early on in his career, he's an example. One of his last gigs, in Europe, doing a few songs at some award evening.

Sorry to destroy an illusion, if that is the case. I love Roy and I hate lipsyching, but I can't deny he did it, be it rarely.

  • @petervankan1 You got proof of him lip-syncing?

  • One of my favorite songs.

  • @plinqth Well, he certainly didn't have to in terms of his ability to sing live. He did lip sync on occasion though.

  • He lost so much but he died a real man...on his feet with his head held high

  • I was alright for a while, and then I stopped, you were gone. Thank you for leaving the vids and music, your magical voice for me and others to see, listen to.

    You are missed.

With tears in my heart, at this moment I say:

    RIP Royo

  • @RoyOrbisonFan2

It was probably because the sound stage wasn't prepared to do a live sound mix, like American Bandstand, they had to lip-sync all their shows.
