Even if you're a big fan of balut, you've got to concede the point: it is truly one of the oddest foods out there.

Not to get into too much detail, but a little explanation may be necessary for the uninitiated.

Balut is a duck egg in which the embryo is allowed to grow and mature until it is quite clearly a baby duck. That's right. A baby duck, with all its baby duck parts stuffed into a shell with the yolk and egg white, now crisscrossed with blood vessels and featherlike growths. At this point it's boiled and eaten whole.

Is there really any more to say? Open wide...
