We installed a Fujitsu concealed heat pump system in a 90 year old home with original plaster ceilings. The walls and ceilings were already cracking so we had to take extra care when making our cuts for the ceiling duct registers. We used a Fein multi-tool with a carbide blade to cut the plaster and a wood cutting blade to cut the lath. This takes longer but gives you a lot cleaner cut than a recipicating saw(Sawzall) because it will not make the lath bounce and crack the plaster.
