That's a good reason... but it seems the German have found a way to do it, the acceleration/deceleration is very smooth and risk-free for users.

I guess it depends on the energy-efficiency level that you want to reach. Besides, many escalators don't stop completely because of mechanical wear that occurs every time a high voltage jump starts the device. The sudden acceleration that would result could also represent a safety risk for users.

Interesting concept, but I'm not clear why they just slow down instead of STOPPING... in Berlin, all escalators start and stop when people get on/off.

It's pretty common now on most new installations as an energy saving feature. Neat though eh??
