One of the biggest hits from Chum Kem, the man who brought the twist to Cambodia. Written by Mr. Ael Bonna, remastered by Sonkhmer.

Chum Kem's life sounds more like a movie than reality. While a young Cambodian student in the late 1950's, he received a scholarship to study ceramics in Italy. There, his Italian girlfriend or wife at the time encouraged him to enter a singing contest, which he won, after which he recorded several Italian language songs on vinyl.

In 1960 he appeared in the Italian musical film "Un Mandarino per Teo", in the role of "Il Cinese", or "the Chinaman".

Now single, Chum Kem returned to Cambodia and had his first hit song, "Kampuchea Twist", which featured the dance that would make him famous in his homeland.

After his rise to fame in Cambodia, his life would take several unexpected turns. At some point he married the lovely Ms. Keo Montha, later he went into politics, and in around 1971 or 1972 he was prosecuted together with members of the royal family for alleged plots against the Khmer Republic.

After some time spent in prison, and the Khmer Rouge takeover of Cambodia, his story becomes harder to follow. His fate is unknown.

  • Do you have the other twist song by Chum Kem, I think it's called, "Twiss Kampuchea." I've never heard it before but it's my dad's favorite. :D

I'm sorry to say that I don't have Kampuchea Twist. In fact, I have never heard even an altered version of the song - I have only read about it. I do know that Kampuchea Twist was Chum Kem's first big hit in Cambodia and was the song that introduced the twist to the nation. Today it is a very hard song to find.

  • @Nuclear720 This song was sung by Ou Larrain, not Chhum Kem, the one who also sang : Chis Cyclo tov p-sar tmei. The famous one that Chhum Kem sing was : Kampuchea Twist and Twist again (now sung by Sos March). bring back good old memories! Thank you for sharing.

  • He also was the best twister, all the way to the ground! and I learned from him! still do after all these time, not to the ground though! getting harder with age! LOL
