A Short video of the triple expansion steam engined heritage tugboat SS Master getting underway for Maple Bay, British Columbia in 2003. She was built in 1922 in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The Triple Expansion Engine was built by William Beardmore & Company, of Coatbridge Scotland for a World War 1 Royal Navy Minesweeper that was to be equiped with two such engines, but never completed.
The SS Master is the sole remaining wooden hulled steam powered tugboat of Her type in North America, and an important part of the maritime heritage of the Province of British Columbia. During Her days of service She hauled barges of Coal, Building Materials and log booms of timber up and down the west coast, and transitted as far as San Franciso and as far north as Alaska. She also hauled all the limestone that was used to construct the the present day Fairmount Hotel Vancouver. ( Camera Footage Courtesy of Peter Blue )

  • Scottish engineering at its best.............

  • is it oil fired or coal fire?

  • I do not know why the engineer struggles with the throttle, as to controll the RPM by the stephenson linkage, by adjustung the linkage to 30 %or 20%

Even at half he still has the linkage on full stroke, rather than to open the main throttle full and adjust only thr linkage so the desired RPM...

I was told, the Throttle remains open, till thr signal "finsihed with engies" ist signalized, this will now force the engineer to shut off the throttle - finish

  • Great video!

  • What a fantastic sound.

    Magnificent engine.

  • America was no slouch either ;)

Just shows that the brittish made some of the best steam engines in the world. :)

Even during the 1800's brittain was an engineering marvel :)
