Pulling the EJ25 out of my 2000 Subaru Impreza 2.5 RS with 196,000 miles. I was a little behind on my maintenance and didn't change the timing belt in time. While the belt was just fine, the idler sprocket bearing pack gave out and this slacked the belt enough to damage the engine. It was cheaper to get another engine than to get the parts to rebuild the heads.

By the way, in the video I say that too much oxygen leans the combustion and my brother counters that too much oxygen makes it rich. I'm right, and he's wrong. Too much oxygen leans and too much fuel makes it rich.

  • afaik the EJ25 is compatible between years... I lucked out and found a same year engine from the same model, with only 60,000 miles on it in a junkyard... paid $1300 for it iirc. And it was from an automatic so I know the engine most likely wasn't stressed. It also had brand new oil and plugs in it... and a broken right-side head cover... think the poor guy was driving home from the dealer after 60,000 mile factory maintenance and was hit in the front-right fender and totaled the poor car.

  • Man!! this happen to me as well on my 99 2.5rs same exact problem idler sprocket seized and valves are screwed. how much did you get the new used engine for? is it the same as forester or legacy? or do i need to find an rs engine?

  • my engine code is a EJ25 , but my heads are different , my heads are duel cam. my car is a 97 legacy gt

  • When there's an exhaust leak, air will get sucked into the exhaust system between exhaust pulses, and exhaust will puff out during the positive pressure of the exhaust pulse. The exhaust coming out doesn't affect the amount of oxygen in the exhaust, but the air that comes in does -- the oxygen sensor will detect more oxygen (from the fresh air) in the exhaust, hence the lean code.

  • Well you got 10 years running out of it by the looks. Replacing the timing belt and pulleys should not really be optional at around 140,000-160,000.

  • Rich means more fuel than O2 Lean means more O2 than Fuel

  • @keetonbob hell yeah!

  • Bloodhound Gang ftw!
