Playing my travel banjo, an old ODE, in the hotel, 800 miles from home, very homesick, with a mute... umm, to keep the guy in the room next to me from shooting through the wall! No D tuners on this old axe, so I was just trying to amuse myself and come up with a high part, and this is what happened.....

  • Sounding nice! Fiberskyn head?

  • Yep, fiberskin, it had a clear head when I got it 'bout 25 years ago. I got really into clawhammer several years ago, so I put on the fiberskin and made this my frailing banjo. I think the mute makes it sound kind of like a dobro....

Um....That IS a five string. Notice the little peg sticking out of the neck?

  • great playing.. really great playing, very soothing

  • i have a MIKE'S BANJO MUTE and it works great, what are you using

  • It does kinda sound like a dobro! Very weird! I would've never thought a mute would do this! That's actually pretty neat.

  • Get a 5 string, a 4 string banjo doesn't have the 5th string which is used for that plunky sound you associate with banjos.

  • I found it quite easy to pick up as it's a real fun instrument to play. It's very hard to master though not impossible!

Get a 5-string, best one you can afford, either that or start with a cheaper one to see if you like it, then spend more on a better banjo.

  • you play relly nice, i want to larn, i play bass and i don't know if buying a 4 or a 5 string banjo, what can you recomend, is it very dificult?

  • its amazing how well those mutes work. Ode makes some good banjers..their new ones sound really good

  • wow that sounds good!
