Singer-actress Prudence Liew 劉美君 has temporarily returned from her home in California as the host of TVB's new reality show The Voice. As its name suggests, the programme seeks to find the region's best singing talent.

It is the first time that Liew has taken up this kind of challenge but, whilst in our photography studio recently, she told us that she is more than up to the task. In this interview, the 44-year-old reveals her surprise at the commitment by the producers and also the participants.

She told us that success in the entertainment industry is often down to luck and that singers who are rejected from the show should not be too disheartened - talent normally shines through in the end.

  • She speaks wonderfully. Most Hong Kong people are great people, I love them, but when they start to speak English, they make me cry. All schools teaching English in Hong Kong should try to learn from Maryknoll College.

  • I don't understand why these SCMP interviews have to be in English!

What is the point in doing this in English?

I know South China is an English paper but it's not like English speaking people in Hong Kong are ever interested in any of these actors have to say! Audience who watch these actors tend to be the Cantonese speaking population of HK.

Why English? There aren't even Chinese subtitles.

It's almost like excluding people who don't speak English, like back in the Colonial days. So degrading!

  • How did this become a forum on her English? Anyone actually listened to what she said? This is so Hong Kong...

  • Everybody has an accent, whether it's an American accent, English accent, Scottish accent, Australian accent, etc. Even Americans have regional accents: East Coast, West Coast, Southern, and so on. Prudence's English is many times better than some "native" speakers.

  • like

you can tell she's not a native speaker

because she still has a bit of accent and like

sometimes what she says just seems weird

    but still

wish that all Hong Kong people could speak english like that :)

  • Fluent english!

  • @dousethelightss totally agreed

  • i never knew she could speak english..LOL

  • OMG, I am so scared of her ribs!

  • Prud! I told you even you graduated from a well-known Sec Sch. So what! You made too much big mistakes in this stage. Reality showed us you are not qualified. Maryknoll College graduate speaks Foul language in TVB. Shame!!! I graduated from the same school. You ruin our name. Understand!
