Taken on the 25th June 2006 on a Sydney-Wollongong-Moss Vale-Sydney trip with 3112 and 3801 at the front. Here we pass a disused or rather never used tunnel on the line between Robertson and Unanderra which was to form part of the Maldon to Dombarton line.

  • Ive been there....its couple of km from farmborough heights ....i hiked there lots of times.....just follow the railway track its pretty cool

  • I wonder if it was also the lack of technology on how to build the 190m span on the partly constructed bridge

and then the also almost 200m span over a river that is (was?) water catchment area

  • There is also a partly built bridge for the Maldon / Dombarton line

  • Always been the way. In Western Australia, much was made of how much it cost to put a rail line in from the Perth CBD to Mandurah, about 75km south. When construction started, the previous government put in a tunnel that went under the southbound lane of the freeway, coming out between the north and south lanes. The next govt. chose to take it straight from the city, instead of the long way round from the east-west freight line. Although they may hook it up one day

  • It was a government thing at the time, one government had the great idea of building a railway line from Maldon just north if Picton, to Dombarton, NSW, and the proceeding government canning the project because they lacked the future foresight of the previous government.

  • whyed they stop boring it ??????

  • Correct-the start of the 4km long Avon tunnel on the line-which had about 1km of it bored before construction was halted

  • Actually this tunnel can't be classed as disused because it never was commissioned for rail traffic. Abandoned during construction, the tunnel is part of the formation for the Maldon to Dombarton Railway.
