Dr. Allen Sessoms, President of the University of the District of Columbia, welcomed Mayor Vincent Gray, members of the City Council, and the community to a ribbon cutting ceremony signaling a rebirth for Washington's only public university. The biggest green roof project in the city, the renovated Dennard Plaza represents the university's commitment to become a model of sustainability for the country. Also present at the ceremony was Japanese Ambassador Ichiro Fujisaki, who helped Dr. Sessoms and the Mayor honor Diana Mayhew, President of the National Cherry Blossom Festival, whose organization donated 40 cherry trees to be planted on campus in commemoration of the 100 year anniversary of Japan's original gift of cherry trees to Washington, DC.
