The band was formed in San Francisco in 1977 by students of electronic music Blaine L. Reininger and Steven Brown (and later joined by Peter Principle and Winston Tong).

The very first Tuxedomoon full-length album came of in 1980 on The Residents' label Ralph Records. It included the single, What Use? It remains a classic to this day, with its drum machines, organ, sax, bass and strong atmospheres. It was described as impresionist and futuristic chamber music.

The San Francisco experimental post punk/new wave band continues to record and perform.
Their latest release was in 2007. Blaine Reininger, Peter Principle and Steven Brown have been constants.
