Arve Tellefsen in Maine: Ole Bull's Fairy Tale (1982), Excerpt from Episode V: Gully Oven Hollow

(English Subtitles) In this segment from the five-part, classic,1982 Norwegian Broadcasting Company documentary about the life of 19th-century Norwegian violin virtuoso Ole Bull (1810--1880), Arve Tellefsen showed that Bull's music has the power to enchant even a swarm of Maine black flies and mosquitos.

As Tellefsen recreated an historic concert Bull gave in 1871 in a rocky hollow called Gully Oven in West Lebanon, Maine, black flies and mosquitos seemed to whirl about Tellefsen's head like tiny, winged troll spirits.

Meet Bull's granddaughter, Sylvea Bull Curtis (1907--1988), as she talked about her memories from her childhood on Lysøen and about Bull's connection to this small Maine town where Bull's daughter, Olea Bull Vaughan (1871--1911), was born. Sylvea was the person who donated the Bull estate on Lysøen to the country of Norway,

The toddlers and small children from West Lebanon, Maine, who gathered 29 years ago at the edge of Gully Oven hollow to peer down at Arve Tellefsen as he played, are now approaching middle age.
