SPELLWELL, a delightfully entertaining (and educational) new book by Mike Dibb, illustrated by Roddy Maude-Roxby, published by Muswell Press
English is a particularly idiosyncratic language, whose spelling can be puzzling, even exasperating, to children and anyone else learning to read, write and speak it. Words that sound the same can be written quite differently, with different meanings. In "Spellwell" Mike Dibb's rhyming couplets, wittily enhanced by Roddy Maude-Roxby's drawings, turn the phonetic vagaries of English spelling into something playful. "Spellwell" brings humour to bear on what can seem a bewildering free-play between sound and sense, rhyme and reason. Beautifully designed by Ana Rachel, this small book consists of forty-five illustrated verses, ending with a short rhyming dictionary which readers can use to invent verses of their own and to which they can add new words. A perfect addition to more formal teaching, for children and adults alike.
