Graffiti artist Lady Pink paints with University of Iowa students

Graffiti artist Lady Pink, famous for tattooing New York City in the 1980s and '90s, visited the University of Iowa campus in April 2010 in conjunction with the University of Iowa Museum of Art (UIMA)'s exhibition, "Two Turntables and a Microphone: Hip-Hop Contexts featuring Harry Allen's 'Part of the Permanent Record: Photos from the Previous Century,'" which featured a digital display of her work.

Collaborating with UI assistant professor Deborah Whaley and seven UI art students, the team painted an 8-by-20 foot mural over three 8-hour days. Completed using latex and spray paint, the bright colors bring the mural to life with a frenzied scene of farmland, cows properly attired in Iowa clothing, a cityscape in the background, a tornado, a woman holding a infant child, and the UI's own Old Capitol landmark.

Titled Consensus, the mural is on display as part of the Two Turntables and a Microphone through June 27 in the Iowa Memorial Union's Black Box Theater.
