Solo piano version of Alanis Morissette's "Purgatorying."
Arranged and performed by Todd Allen Gates, author of "Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer" and "Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames."
My three YouTube channels:
- http://youtube.com/user/ToddGates - my musician channel
- http://youtube.com/user/ToddAllenGates - where I discuss the ideas in "Dialogue with a Christian Proselytizer" (a dialogue between a Christian proselytizer and a Socratic skeptic)
- http://youtube.com/user/ToddAllenGates2 - where I discuss the ideas in "Hunting, Gathering, & Videogames" (such as "Why do we have to work?" and "Why do we have to use money?" and "How should we define 'success'?")
PURGATORYING LYRICS
Entertain me for the tenth hour in a row again
Anesthetize me with your gossip and many random anecdotes
And fill every hour with activity or ear candy
Drop me off at intersections in any city metropolitan
And keep me in this state
And keep me purgatorying
And sing me back to sleep
This is far more than I had bargained for
Start every week with a break-neck urgent design
And end every speed day with my briefcase representing free time
Spending my fruits my purchases become my lifeline
Please give my love to my family
I'll doubtfully be home at Christmas time
Don't disturb me in this state
Please leave me purgatorying
I'll be damned if I'm to wake
This is far more than I am equipped for
I've held you up like a deity
Like you're the sole owner of wings
This unrequited tunnel vision
And I wonder why I've not been writing
Please keep me in this state
Please keep me purgatorying
Please rock me back to sleep
This love is more than I have bargained for
I'll be damned if I'm to wake
This is far more than I'm equipped for
I'm subscribed to your other channel and I just chanced upon this video. It's nice to see that someone else appreciates a good song when they hear it! Excellent composition, though I feel that the song is a too mechanical without the vocals and I get a completely different vibe from this than I do from Alanis' version. I'll definitely be checking out your other vids now!

It's true that a melody on the piano can't match the expression of the human voice. (Many of my other videos are of me playing blues harp -- and the harp is a lot closer to the human voice: one of the closest of all instruments.)

Yes -- I couldn't quite capture what the band was doing, so I came up with an arrangement that I thought sounded right for solo piano.
> even more amazing!!
